The Almajiri crisis is a reflection of our society’s insensitivity to global transformations. Over time, we have gradually shifted from a collectivist culture to an individualistic one, following in the footsteps of the Western world. However, we often forget that African societies are not yet developed enough to fully adopt individualistic behaviors. Ironically, even our colonial masters are striving to mitigate the negative effects of such behaviors.
Today, an average northerner lacks a full-time mentor in different aspects of life. Instead, learning occurs passively through watching unproductive content or through personal mistakes. Both approaches are inadequate. When it comes to career guidance, counseling, skill acquisition, apprenticeship, business incubation, and acceleration, our local communities are found wanting. If even the privileged children of the rich struggle with acquiring essential life skills, how can we expect indigent individuals, such as the Almajiri, to develop the skills necessary for self-reliance and productivity?
Despite these challenges, we can still change the narrative by making positive impacts in our local communities. Innovative programs that facilitate technical skill acquisition and mentorship can help bridge these gaps. This realization led me to establish Engausa Global Tech Hub, a platform designed to break barriers and foster sustainable human capital development in our society.
At Engausa Global Tech Hub, we focus on equipping our youth with the necessary skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. We have taken a step further by incubating startup businesses founded by some of our industrious graduates and outsourcing our most tech-savvy alumni to reputable companies such as COSGROVE in Abuja, Chosen One Global Technologies Ltd, and PRUDENCE in Kano.
The Role of Mindset in Sustainable Development
Without proper mentorship and sensitization programs, our youth may misuse modern skills, exacerbating the moral decadence that plagues our society just as we see with many misbehaving on social media. To transform our society, we must collectively work towards reshaping the mindsets of our youth.
It is not too late to redirect negative mindsets towards positive, result-oriented thinking. By investing in mentorship, skill acquisition, and entrepreneurial development, we can build a future where our youth contribute meaningfully to societal progress. The time for change is now!
