From Street to Success: How Almajiri Became a Skilled Job Creator

In the heart of Northern Nigeria, where the Almajiri system once a dominant but later abandoned form of traditional education has long symbolized poverty and wasted potential, a remarkable story is emerging, one that defies stereotypes and inspires hope. A compelling new documentary on ENGAUSA HUB TV captures the journey of a young man who transformed from a struggling Almajiri into a skilled professional and job creator.

Yusuf began his life like many other Almajirai sent away at a young age to seek Islamic knowledge. He wandered the streets, begging for food and surviving on the bare minimum. Although he successfully memorized the Qur’an, he had no access to modern education or a means to earn a living.

His transformation began when he joined Engausa Global Tech Hub, a tech-based social enterprise committed to empowering youth through digital and vocational skills taught in a way that respects their language and background.

Yusuf was introduced to Smartphone Repairs through a scholarship sponsored by ENGAUSA Skills Development Foundation. With every skill he acquired, he saw a new door open. And with every challenge, he became more determined to prove that background is not a barrier to success. What makes Yusuf’s story even more powerful is not just that he changed his own life, but that he’s now changing the lives of others.

From being jobless on the streets, he now owns a small business offering ICT-related services and employs other youth, many of whom were once like him.

He has become:

  • A mentor to younger students
  • A problem-solver in his community
  • And a living testimony of what skill empowerment can do

Yusuf’s journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of ENGAUSA HUB. Their unique training model delivered in Hausa and English makes it easier for young people from less-privileged backgrounds to understand and thrive.

Their mission is simple but powerful:

“To empower the youth with practical skills that lead to employment, dignity, and community development.”

And they are doing exactly that one success story at a time.

Yusuf’s story is not just about one man. It’s a message to every young person who thinks their past defines their future.

It’s also a challenge to society: to look beyond labels and invest in people’s potential.

“Ka daina ganin almajiri a matsayin mara amfani. A ciki akwai masu basira da hikima, sai dai babu dama.”
(Stop seeing Almajiri as useless among them are geniuses, only lacking opportunity)

The video reminds us that with the right mindset, support, and access to skills, anyone can rise from the lowest points of life to become a builder of dreams.

Let’s share this story and inspire others.
